How to Improve Gut-Brain Connection with Chiropractic Adjustments

How Does the Gut Affect the Brain?

At the heart of this communication is the vagus nerve, the longest cranial nerve that extends from the brainstem to the abdomen. The gut is home to the enteric nervous system (ENS), a complex network of over 100 million neurons that controls digestive function. The gut microbiome, the vast community of microbes that reside in your intestines, plays a crucial role in gut-brain communication. These beneficial bacteria produce a wide array of neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers that transmit signals between neurons. In fact, many of the neurotransmitters that regulate mood, like serotonin, dopamine, and GABA, are produced in the gut. Remarkably, over 90% of your body’s serotonin, the “happy hormone”, is synthesized in the digestive tract!

  5. Prioritize Sleep – Sleep is crucial for both gut and brain health. During sleep, the brain clears out toxins and consolidates memories, while the gut undergoes important processes of repair and regeneration. Chronic sleep deprivation can disrupt the gut microbiome, lead to inflammation, and impair cognitive function. Aim to get 7-9 hours of high-quality sleep each night and practice good sleep hygiene habits like maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and creating a relaxing bedtime routine.
